Personal accounts

As a white person, who is very aware of their privilege and the inequity in their country due to racism, I often worry about being a “white saviour”. I find it hard to navigate being an ally without coming across as wanting to be a saviour or seeming to be pandering. Obviously, this struggle is nothing in comparison to actual race-related issues.

White savourism always reminds me of Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side. Usually well-intentioned white folk trying to “help” POC. Problematic cos it assumes POC are lesser than white people instead of true allyship which facilitates POC voices and solutions. Also that helping POC makes you a saint rather than it just being common decency.
